Since January 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has conducted at least 10 cases of forced feeding on hunger-striking migrants across the country, with medical experts and human rights organizations characterizing the practice as torture.[1] Of these incidents, at least three and possibly as many as five involved detainees who had stopped eating in protest of detention conditions.[1]

Dr. Kate Sugarman, a medical expert, stated that "what they're doing qualifies as torture."[1] Among the cases reviewed, most detained migrants lacked legal representation in related court proceedings.[1]
