Exceptionally low water levels in Europe's second-longest river, the Danube, have exposed the rusted hulls and broken masts of military vessels intentionally sunk by Nazi Germany during World War II.[1] The discovery has occurred near Prahovo port on the Serbia-Romania border, where the dried riverbed has brought these warships to the surface.[1]
The Danube riverbed contains hundreds of submerged wrecks from the war, many of which still carry weapons and explosives.[1] Beyond the historical revelations, the severe water shortage has triggered broader consequences for the region: several power plants in Central and Eastern Europe now face potential closure, while ferry services, tourism operations, and cargo transport on the Danube and Rhine rivers have experienced sharp declines.[1] The persistent low-water crisis reflects a recurring pattern in recent years, as climate change continues to affect water levels across Europe's major waterways.[1]
