Australia's Interior Minister Tony Burke has cancelled a scheduled speech on migration policy at the National Press Club.[1] The postponement comes as Burke faces mounting scrutiny from both the opposition and One Nation over the government's immigration strategy.[1]
The government aims to reduce annual net overseas migration (NOM) from its current level of approximately 300,000 to 225,000.[1] According to projections, NOM is estimated at 295,000 for the 2025-26 financial year and forecast to decline to 245,000 in 2026-27, with the 2025 calendar year figure reaching 301,000.[1] However, achieving these targets presents multiple obstacles, including shortages of skilled migrant workers, demands for aged care labour, international education exports, and the need for temporary agricultural workers.[1]
A comprehensive immigration policy review led by Martin Parkinson was completed in early 2023 but has not been effectively implemented.[1] Immigration policy expert Abul Rizvi has criticized the government's approach, stating that reducing net migration "in any rational way" involves significant delays in implementation, impact assessment, and outcome disclosure, and that "the government has dealt with it too late."[1] Burke's speech is expected to be rescheduled within the coming two weeks.[1]
