The Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union (QNMU) has called for improved workplace conditions and increased healthcare funding following the circulation of a video depicting a violent patient attacking a nurse.[1] According to a recent union survey, 82% of QNMU members reported experiencing violence at work.[1] One senior nurse, Kat, shared an account of being struck in the face by a patient, sustaining serious bruising.[1]
The union is demanding that the state government increase funding for ambassador-model programs—non-traditional security personnel who provide support—and workplace violence prevention initiatives.[1] In the video from 2024, nurse Daniel Nelson at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital was assaulted, with security personnel taking nearly a minute to arrive.[1] The union noted that while the previous budget cycle added approximately 10 ambassador-model positions, no additional funding has been allocated for the current year.[1]
Health Minister Tim Nicholls announced that since the Liberal National Party came to power, 10,000 healthcare workers have been hired, including 7,200 frontline doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.[1] The union has set a target to increase nurse and midwife numbers by 18,700 by 2032.[1]
