A comprehensive analysis of eight independent studies has identified a significant link between occupational pesticide exposure and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as motor neurone disease.[1] The meta-analysis, which consolidated data from 1,734 ALS cases across research conducted in the United States, Canada, France, Italy, and Australia, found that individuals exposed to pesticides in the workplace face a 61 to 71 percent increased risk of developing the condition.[1] Herbicide exposure specifically was associated with a 71 percent elevated risk.[1]
The findings suggest that pesticide exposure may constitute a previously underrecognized occupational risk factor for ALS, a neurodegenerative disease with severe consequences.[1] In Australia alone, approximately 8 people per 100,000 experience the disease, with diagnosed patients typically surviving 2 to 3 years following diagnosis.[1] Over 90 percent of ALS cases are sporadic in nature, occurring without known family history or genetic causes.[1] However, researchers urge caution in interpreting these results, noting that methodological variations across studies and reliance on self-reported exposure history in many investigations introduce potential recall bias that may affect the reliability of the estimates.[1]
