S&P Global Ratings has warned that persistent heatwaves across Europe are driving up claims related to heat-associated deaths and deteriorating health, threatening the profitability of life, health, and reinsurance companies and potentially leading to higher premiums for customers 1. Temperatures have surpassed 40 degrees Celsius in multiple European countries this month, setting new records in Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary 1.
Europe's aging population has exacerbated the impact of heatwaves on the elderly 1. Between 2004 and 2024, the proportion of the European Union's population aged 65 and older increased from 16.4% to 21.6%, while the share of those aged 80 and above rose from 3.8% to 6.1% 1. During the heatwave from June 22 to June 28, approximately 9,000 of the 10,650 recorded excess deaths were among individuals aged 65 and older 1. In the United Kingdom, a four-day heatwave in May and an eight-day heatwave in June resulted in a combined 2,877 excess deaths, surpassing the 1,504 excess deaths recorded during the summer of 2025 1.
S&P noted that the current heatwaves have not yet affected the credit ratings of these companies 1. However, the rating agency cautioned that these ratings could change in the medium to long term 1.
