Following its withdrawal from China's home appliance market, Samsung Electronics is now contracting its smartphone business on the mainland.[1] The company has set a monthly sales threshold of 300,000 yuan per store, with outlets and staff failing to meet this target facing gradual elimination.[1]
Samsung's position in China's smartphone market has deteriorated sharply. According to IDC data, the company's market share in mainland China fell from 0.4% in the same period of 2025 to 0.1% in the second quarter of 2026, with shipments declining 60.8% year-over-year and dropping to tenth place in the market rankings.[1] The second quarter shipment volume reached approximately 66,000 units.[1] Samsung now trails brands including Huawei, Apple, OPPO, vivo, and Xiaomi.[1]
Store closures have affected multiple cities across the mainland, including Shenzhen, Fuzhou, Zhengzhou, Xi'an, Kunming, and Hefei.[1] This smartphone contraction comes after Samsung announced in May its decision to cease selling home appliances and audiovisual products in mainland China, though it had stated at that time that its mobile phone business would continue normal operations.[1]
