Five Amazon countries launched a coordinated enforcement operation from July 15 to 31 targeting illegal environmental activities across the region [1]. Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru deployed more than 3,600 officials in Operation Green Shield 2026 to combat illegal mining, logging, wildlife trafficking, fuel smuggling, and land invasion [1].
The joint action resulted in significant seizures and arrests [1]. Authorities arrested 839 individuals and conducted 1,045 field operations [1]. Officers confiscated over 280,000 cubic meters of illegal timber, 195 tons of minerals including gold, carbon, iron, and copper, and rescued more than 3,000 live animals while recovering 430 dead animals [1]. The total value of seized items exceeded $280 million [1].
The operation was coordinated by the International Climate Enforcement Initiative (I2LEC), supported by the United Arab Emirates and working in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, which was established in 2023 [1].
