Situational Awareness LP, a hedge fund founded by 23-year-old trader Leopold Aschenbrenner in late 2024, was forced to liquidate its public investment portfolio to Citadel following substantial losses in late July.[1] The fund had initially raised $225 million and grown its assets to over $25 billion approximately one month before the liquidation.[1] Despite achieving returns as high as 270% through May, concentrated bets on AI chip stocks and hardware-related companies proved unsustainable when market volatility struck.[1]
The fund's downfall was precipitated by excessive leverage and concentration risk.[1] With a volatility rate of approximately 150% and a leverage multiple of 4 times, the fund lost two-thirds of its assets within a week.[1] On July 24, Aschenbrenner sent an investor memorandum acknowledging that the fund had "not been immune" to market fluctuations.[1] The fund's major long positions included CoreWeave, Nebius, Bloom Energy, Iris Energy, Micron, SK Hynix, and private equity stakes in Anthropic.[1]
Despite the forced liquidation of public holdings, the fund remained up 80% year-to-date from its January inception through the time of liquidation.[1] The combination of extreme volatility and high leverage made the liquidation an inevitable outcome for the nascent fund.[1]
