Female participants in India's anti-government "Cockroach Janta Party" protest movement have become targets of widespread harassment, doxxing, and sexual abuse following their public activism on social media.[1] Thousands of young people posted satirical content mocking Prime Minister Modi, but many women who participated subsequently experienced severe online attacks including rape threats, non-consensual image sharing, sexual harassment, and violent intimidation.[1]
The harassment has extended beyond online spaces, with affected women reporting pressure from family members and classmates to delete their protest videos.[1] Women protesters have been subjected to sexual slurs, branded as "prostitutes," and labeled "anti-national" and "terrorist" elements.[1] In contrast, male participants in the movement have not faced comparable gender-based harassment and abuse.[1]
Police responded to the protests on July 20 by deploying tear gas and batons against demonstrators.[1] According to law enforcement, 60 protesters and 118 police personnel sustained injuries, though movement participants dispute these figures and claim actual casualty numbers are higher.[1] West Bengal authorities began arresting protesters starting July 24.[1]
