Lawmakers from multiple states have urged federal regulators to police prediction markets that allow betting on destructive wildfires. [1] Senators from Oregon, California, Nevada, Minnesota, and New Hampshire sent a letter to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) targeting platforms that offer such wagers. [1]
The senators specifically cited Polymarket, which offered bets on the Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025, as well as another platform that accepts what is described as "simulated betting" on California wildfires. [1] In their correspondence, the lawmakers stated: "Offering bets on destructive wildfires threatens to minimize communities' suffering, all so the rich and powerful can profit." [1] The legislators argue that these markets enable wealthy individuals to profit from natural disasters while exacerbating the suffering of affected communities. [1]
