The Trump administration is pursuing the deportation of Salah Sarsour, a permanent resident and leader of Wisconsin's largest mosque, in proceedings before an immigration court in Chicago.[1] Sarsour was arrested at his Milwaukee home by immigration enforcement in late March 2024.[1]
A former Israeli lawyer testified that Sarsour was tortured and coerced into confessing while imprisoned in Israel during the 1980s and 1990s, yet was never charged with any connection to terrorist organizations.[1] The attorney, Jawad Boulos, stated that Sarsour accepted a plea agreement in the mid-1990s under duress.[1] Despite these circumstances, the Department of Homeland Security has designated him a diplomatic threat based on those decades-old convictions.[1] Sarsour, who has no criminal record in the United States, contends he faces persecution for his support of Palestinian causes.[1]
A federal judge released Sarsour from custody in June 2024, finding that the government had failed to adequately explain why it was attempting to deport him after permitting him to reside in America for decades.[1] His case is scheduled for a further hearing on September 14, 2024, during which Sarsour will appear remotely but will not testify.[1] Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October 2023, Sarsour is among multiple individuals arrested and facing deportation threats in connection with their advocacy for Palestine.[1]
