A 10-year-old boy named Nathaniel Rai was pulled from powerful waves at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, California, on July 25 after being swept away by the surf.[1] Sixteen-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams managed to hold onto the boy in the turbulent water, and with assistance from a second lifeguard, brought him back to shore.[1] The boy lost consciousness during the incident, and the dramatic rescue was captured on video and shared widely.[1]
Despite the severity of the situation, the child has made a strong recovery.[1] The boy's father, Sumit Rai, described how close his son came to tragedy, saying he "was two seconds away from dying."[1] Currently, the boy is recovering well and has experienced only bruising, breathing difficulties lasting a few days, and back soreness.[1] Notably, the boy has no recollection of the rescue itself.[1]
