Vitalina Yaroshenko, a 20-year-old fourth-year psychology student at Kyiv's Mohyla Academy, was killed during a Russian missile attack on the Darnytskyi district while volunteering to help those injured in the strike.[1] Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of employing "double strike" tactics, in which a first attack draws rescue personnel to the scene before a second wave of strikes follows.[1] Hundreds of mourners attended her funeral, where she was laid to rest in a military cemetery in Kyiv.[1]
The attack occurred as part of a broader assault that saw Russia deploy 220 aerial weapons that evening, including 35 missiles and 185 unmanned drones.[1] Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept only one ballistic missile and one air-to-ground missile.[1] The strike on Kyiv's Darnytskyi district left at least nine people dead and 33 injured.[1] Among those killed alongside Yaroshenko was 25-year-old Eva Royse, also struck down while assisting survivors.[1]
Yaroshenko's mother, Natalia, expressed her grief and pride in her daughter's actions, saying: "I have given up the entire meaning of my life, but I feel tremendous pride."[1]
