A large-scale funeral was held Tuesday in the Deir al-Balah area of central Gaza to commemorate 112 bodies recovered from the ruins of a residential building destroyed during an Israeli airstrike on November 22, 2023 [1]. The attack killed more than 300 people, but recovery efforts were delayed due to continued Israeli bombardment [1]. Among the recovered remains were 40 children, along with women and other civilians [1].
Since the airstrike, at least 157 people remain missing from the site, and at least 7,400 others are reported still buried beneath the rubble [1]. Zaher al-Waheidi, the director of the Gaza Health Ministry's records department, stated that the true death toll may be several thousand higher than officially documented [1].
Since October 7, 2023, more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza [1]. The initial Hamas attack on Israel on that date resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths and 251 people taken captive [1]. Following a ceasefire, five Israeli soldiers were killed [1].
