Los Angeles fire officials confirmed on Tuesday that the catastrophic Eaton Fire was caused by an electrical discharge event involving a decommissioned tower operated by Southern California Edison.[1] The fire, which erupted on January 7, 2025, claimed 19 lives and destroyed or damaged over 9,000 residential and commercial structures across 22 square miles.[1]
The determination followed an 18-month investigation by the Los Angeles Fire Department.[1] Firefighters required nearly a month to fully extinguish the blaze.[1] Among the 19 fatalities, 18 victims were residents of West Altadena.[1]
Southern California Edison contested aspects of the emergency response, asserting that Los Angeles County agencies failed to issue evacuation warnings in a timely manner and that water agencies supplied insufficient water for firefighting efforts.[1]
