The United Nations World Food Programme has raised alarm over a severe nutrition crisis affecting Afghanistan's children, warning that malnutrition rates have reached critical levels across one-third of the country's provinces.[1] The agency reported that approximately 3.7 million Afghan children are expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition this year, while 1.2 million pregnant and nursing women face similar risks.[1] Twelve Afghan provinces have now reached record-high levels of severe child malnutrition.[1]
The crisis has been exacerbated by funding shortages. In 2025, 142 health centers have closed due to reduced assistance, leaving more than 13,000 children without access to nutrition treatment services.[1] During the August to October period, food distributions were suspended due to lack of funds, preventing nearly one million malnourished women and children from receiving essential nutrition services within a five-month span.[1] John Aylieff, the WFP's country director for Afghanistan, emphasized the urgency of intervention, stating: "We must act now to stem the rise in child deaths, which this crisis is provoking."[1]
To address the emergency, the World Food Programme is calling for $540 million in funding over the next six months.[1]
