Queensland's Liberal National Party government has removed more than twenty mentions of the word "gender" from the Office for Women website, according to allegations that the changes represent an effort to "dewokify" public services.[1] The mission statement on the website's "About" page was altered from "We're working towards a gender equal Queensland."[1] References to gender pay gaps and other gender-related content were also deleted across the site.[1]
The removals followed a directive from management in January instructing staff to scan the website for instances of the word "gender" in order to "reframe" the content.[1] Former employees have claimed they were told the term "gender" was "tiring" and "burdensome," and that it would remind the Liberal National Party of LGBTIQA+ groups.[1] Additional design changes to the website included altering the logo from purple to blue and adding the slogan "Serving Queensland," reflecting the party's branding.[1]
Women's Minister Fiona Simpson rejected the allegations, stating "this is absolutely wrong" and maintaining that the website updates were undertaken to launch Queensland's first women's economic security strategy.[1]
