An experimental production of Wagner's "Ring Cycle" featuring artificial intelligence-generated stage designs premiered at Germany's Bayreuth Festival, drawing both applause and boos from audiences celebrating the event's 150th anniversary.[1] The production, titled "10010110"—a reference to the binary representation of 150—and subtitled "From Myth to Code," was developed by curator Marcus Lobbes and utilized approximately 1,000 images from fifteen previous Bayreuth productions to train AI models that generated scenery for the 14.5-hour performance staged over four evenings.[1] Two screens measuring 20 by 60 meters displayed the AI-created visuals as the drama unfolded across four nights.[1]
The technical realization of Lobbes's vision involved approximately twelve AI models, including Stable Diffusion, running on custom PCs equipped with NVIDIA RTX 5090 graphics cards.[1] The cast included Michael Volle as Wotan, Camilla Nylund as Brünnhilde, and Klaus Florian Vogt as Siegfried.[1] When the production concluded, the audience responded with 17 minutes of applause, though the creative team's appearance on stage was accompanied by 30 seconds of booing and whistling.[1] Katharina Wagner, the composer's great-great-granddaughter and current festival director, had invited Lobbes to develop the production in February 2023.[1]
