Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have developed a bioengineered chewing gum capable of significantly reducing human papillomavirus (HPV) levels in the oral cavity. [1] In testing, the gum extract decreased HPV levels by 93% in saliva samples and 80% in oral rinse samples. [1] A single dose also reduced levels of Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) and Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn)—two bacteria associated with head and neck cancer—to near-zero levels. [1]
