Wang Jingsong, a researcher at the China Meteorological Administration, became the first Chinese scientist to receive the William Nordberg Medal on August 3 at the 46th International Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) Scientific Assembly held in Florence, Italy [1]. The honor coincided with the naming of an asteroid after him [1].
Wang currently serves as director of the National Satellite Meteorological Center (National Space Weather Monitoring and Warning Center) and chief designer of the Fengyun Meteorological Satellite Program [1]. He has achieved significant accomplishments in space weather monitoring and forecasting, as well as in the development of the Fengyun meteorological satellite program, advancing China's space weather operations from nascent beginnings to world-leading capabilities [1]. The William Nordberg Medal is awarded biennially, with two scientists receiving the honor each year since 2022 [1].
China has become the only country besides the United States capable of comprehensive end-to-end space weather monitoring across the Sun-Earth system [1]. In a joint assessment by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), China's space weather operations system achieved the unique distinction of receiving all-A ratings globally [1]. Data from Fengyun meteorological satellites are now being utilized across 139 countries and regions [1].
