China's three major technology companies have intensified their competition in the artificial intelligence-powered office productivity space through rapid product consolidation and aggressive feature expansion.[1] On July 30, ByteDance completed an organizational restructuring, merging its Feishu product team with its Doubao AI assistant team to form a unified Doubao product division, while simultaneously integrating its Feishu commercial team with the Volcano Engine team to establish a "Creative Services Platform."[1] These moves reflect ByteDance's strategic commitment to binding its AI capabilities more closely with its workplace collaboration tools.
Alibaba has pursued a similar consolidation strategy by integrating three separate products—QoderWork, Wukong, and MuleRun—into a unified offering called "Qwen Office," which entered public testing with QoderWork serving as the technical foundation.[1] Meanwhile, Tencent has taken an early lead in market adoption, with Tencent's Ma Huateng stating that "WorkBuddy is currently China's most widely used productivity AI agent service" in the company's first quarter 2026 financial report.[1] WorkBuddy and CodeBuddy have demonstrated strong user retention, with active user retention rates exceeding 60 percent and paid user retention rates surpassing 80 percent.[1]
The market momentum reflects broader industry growth trends. ByteDance's Doubao has grown to 382 million monthly active users,[1] while Tencent's WorkBuddy experienced explosive growth in user traffic, climbing from 8.85 million monthly visits in May to 20.97 million in June.[1] On July 6, Tencent launched its Hunyuan Hy3 model with direct integration into WorkBuddy,[1] and on July 30, Tencent introduced "human-machine dual writing" collaborative editing features in partnership with Tencent Docs.[1] ByteDance's Doubao Professional Edition, launched on June 24, now supports local computer operation, browser access, and Skills capability invocation.[1] Industry-wide token consumption demonstrates accelerating adoption, with China's daily average token calls growing from approximately 100 billion in early 2024 to nearly 175 trillion by June 2026.[1] Volcano Engine's latest daily token consumption has reached 180 trillion, with over 200 clients now consuming tokens at the trillion level cumulatively.[1]
