Guatemala's authorities have ordered the evacuation of southern communities following the eruption of the Fuego volcano, which began on Monday and intensified throughout the day.[1][2] Approximately 250 people from around 50 families in the villages of El Porvenir and Las Lajas have been evacuated.[1] The government declared a nationwide orange alert—the second-highest alert level—and closed National Highway 14 near the volcano.[1][2]
The volcano is expelling lava fountains between 200 and 300 meters high, accompanied by gases, ash, lava flows, and pyroclastic flows.[1][2] Pyroclastic flows continued moving down the southeastern slopes into Tuesday morning.[2] Located 16 kilometers west of the tourist city of Antigua, Fuego sits in a volcanically active region.[2] Authorities have also warned observers to stop climbing nearby mountains to film the eruption.[3]
The 2018 eruption of Fuego serves as a stark reminder of the volcano's destructive potential, having killed over 200 people and affecting approximately 1.7 million individuals across the region.[1][2]
