The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to vote on Tuesday to advance Todd Blanche's nomination as attorney general after reaching an agreement with Republican holdouts.[1] Blanche secured the support of GOP senators John Cornyn of Texas and Tom Tillis of North Carolina following negotiations over concerns related to a Trump-era settlement with the Internal Revenue Service.[1]
Under the agreement, Blanche provided written assurances that no $18 billion fund would be established to compensate Trump allies, and clarified that tax audit exemptions contained in the settlement apply only to open claims at the time of resolution.[1] The exemptions extend solely to the litigation parties—Trump, his two sons, and the Trump Organization.[1] Blanche issued a directive late Sunday confirming that such a fund does not exist.[1] The underlying settlement stems from a $10 billion lawsuit involving Trump.[1]
With the GOP opposition resolved, Blanche has emerged as a leading candidate to become the next U.S. attorney general.[2]
