The Shenzhen Emergency Medical Center, in collaboration with the Futian District Education Bureau, hosted a summer internship program on August 3rd that brought fifty outstanding junior students from Futian into emergency response operations.[1] Through hands-on experience—including observation of the dispatch center, tours of ambulances, emergency medical training sessions, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) practice—the young participants gained firsthand insight into the critical work of emergency rescue services.[1]
A central focus of the program was conveying the urgency of rapid response in cardiac emergencies.[1] Instructors emphasized that when cardiac arrest occurs, brain cells begin irreversible damage within four minutes—the critical "golden four minutes."[1] The students learned that if CPR is initiated within one minute and an automated external defibrillator (AED) is deployed, survival rates can reach as high as 90 percent.[1] The program taught the four-step emergency response protocol—"assess, recognize, call, and rescue"—and stressed the fundamental principle that rescuers must first ensure their own safety before attempting to help others.[1] By participating in this immersive experience, the young participants came to understand that emergency response is not solely the domain of medical professionals; ordinary citizens also play a vital role in life-saving efforts.[1]
