Western Australia's government has announced a further $950 million investment in the construction of a new Mandurah Hospital, supplementing the previously committed $150 million for water and electricity infrastructure.[1] Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey described the initiative as the largest hospital construction program in the state's history, stating that "never before have you seen so many hospital projects under way."[1] The new facility is expected to be completed by early 2029.[1]
The announcement coincides with a by-election in the Canning electorate scheduled for August 29, with Labor candidate Georgia Tierney in contention.[1] Tierney responded to earlier criticism about not being given speaking time at the announcement, emphasizing that "the main thing for me is that Karnup's getting built."[1] Additionally, Rockingham General Hospital's master plan has been allocated $1 million.[1]
