A Metro Bank customer has become caught in a dispute over a significant financial loss resulting from fraudulent activity linked to the AI chatbot Claude. Zoli Rutter discovered suspicious transactions on his account on June 19, 2024, after fraudsters gained access to his debit card and used it to purchase Claude credits in multiple transactions ranging from £90 to £200 each, ultimately stealing £14,244.[1]
The bank's initial response proved inadequate in stemming the losses. Metro Bank failed to fully freeze the account immediately, allowing several payments to process before taking complete action.[1] According to the bank's statement, "given the complexity of the fraud, regrettably some payments were processed before we fully froze the card."[1] Under Financial Conduct Authority regulations, unauthorized card fraud refunds should be returned by the end of the next working day.[1]
Following regulatory intervention, Metro Bank issued Rutter a temporary refund and subsequently filed a chargeback dispute with Anthropic, the company behind Claude.[1] Anthropic approved a full refund of the fraudulently obtained credits.[1] Metro Bank provided Rutter with a one-time compensation payment of £300.[1]
