Young technology professionals in Gaza are increasingly turning to remote freelance work as a means of survival and economic opportunity in the aftermath of conflict.[1] With the local unemployment rate exceeding 80%, compared to 22% before the war, and approximately 75% of the telecommunications network damaged or destroyed, those with laptops and stable internet connections are leveraging their skills to provide programming, design, and other digital services to international clients.[1] According to Nicole Hark of the American humanitarian organization Mercy Corps, "if you have a laptop and a stable internet connection, you can work and earn income."[1]
Among those pursuing this path is Walaa Volidis, a 24-year-old Palestinian software engineer who has begun discussing artificial intelligence with mentors in Silicon Valley, California.[1] Tarik Zaeem, formerly a chief technology officer at a local company, has similarly transitioned to freelance programming.[1] Despite their efforts, these workers face significant obstacles including payment difficulties, security threats, and equipment damage. The situation has been further complicated by Israeli defense authorities' classification of computers and computer components as "dual-use" items, which has resulted in import restrictions.[1]
The Gaza Sky Geeks initiative, which was established in 2012 by Google and Mercy Corps to support the local tech sector, has seen two of its three centers destroyed during the conflict.[1] Since a ceasefire began in October, at least 1,250 people have been killed, including 265 children.[1]
