The New South Wales government has announced a $130 million plan to expand emergency short-stay units across six hospitals in Sydney and regional New South Wales.1 The initiative aims to relieve pressure on the state's busiest emergency departments by adding 22 new beds within the next 12 months, with an additional 8 beds to follow in the subsequent year.1
Short-stay units treat patients requiring between four and 24 hours of observation and care, handling semi-urgent cases such as minor head injuries and allergic reactions.1 Since January 2024, these units have treated more than 500,000 patients across the state.1 The expansion will affect St George, Campbelltown, Nepean, Maitland, John Hunter, and Wyong hospitals.1 Westmead Hospital has recently added six beds to its short-stay unit, bringing its total to 15, though its emergency department continues to experience the longest wait times in Sydney, with approximately 10 per cent of patients remaining in the department for close to 22 hours.1
Premier Chris Minns stated, "We know we've had some success with these units across the state,"1 while Health Minister Ryan Park emphasized that short-stay units "enhance emergency department capacity, streamline patient flow and improve patient experience."1 The announcement comes as Sydney's emergency services faced record pressure in early August, with ambulance services recording 4,100 callouts and nearly 10,000 emergency department presentations.1
