Ruben Rocha Moya, the governor of Mexico's Sinaloa state, announced he would take leave again less than a day after declaring his return to office.1 Rocha Moya faces US federal prosecution on charges of conspiring with the Sinaloa drug cartel to traffic fentanyl and other narcotics, alongside nine other current or former Mexican officials accused of colluding with cartel members and accepting bribes in exchange for protection.1 His attempt to resume his position met fierce resistance from members of the ruling Morena party, including President Claudia Sheinbaum, who wrote that "personal interests can never take priority over the people's and the nation's interests."1
Rocha Moya was indicted by the US Department of Justice in late April and initially took leave in early May.1 After nearly four months away, he announced his return on Friday, only to reverse course and request indefinite leave once more.1 State lawmakers are expected to approve his leave request on Sunday.1
