Matt King has been named head coach of the NSW Blues, taking over from Laurie Daley, a position he described as "overwhelming."[1][2] King has signed a two-year contract with the New South Wales Rugby League that includes a third-year option triggered automatically if the team defeats Queensland in either the 2027 or 2028 season.[2]
The appointment has implications for other coaching movements in the league. Ivan Cleary will depart Penrith at the end of 2025 but will need to wait until 2030 before becoming eligible to coach NSW, according to the terms of King's deal.[2] NSWRL CEO Dave Trodden explained the rationale, stating: "Ivan is one of the greatest coaches there will be in rugby league, but we needed was a coach for 2027."[2]
King intends to assemble an informal advisory team to support his coaching efforts, with plans to seek guidance from Craig Bellamy, Craig Fitzgibbon, Michael Maguire, and Trent Robinson.[2] He is departing his position as an assistant coach at the Sydney Roosters, where he has served for ten years.[2]
