U.S. fire and medical officials have cautioned against providing wildland firefighters with glutathione, an unapproved dietary supplement, to counter exposure to wildfire smoke.1 The supplement, administered either intravenously or through a nebulizer, has not been proven safe or effective.1 At least two pharmacies recalled the product in August after detecting bacterial contamination.1
One pharmacy reported receiving complaints from people who experienced fever, chills, and severe headaches following use of the contaminated product.1 Medical experts have warned that injected contaminated supplements "could result in serious medical events, including fever, low blood pressure, inflammatory response, anaphylactic shock, and death."1 The International Association of Fire Fighters, a labor union representing approximately 360,000 first responders, issued the safety warning.1 Although some firefighters claim the supplement has helped them, medical professionals emphasize the lack of clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness.1
The California Board of Pharmacy rescinded a 2025 regulation that would have made the supplement harder to obtain after firefighters opposed it.1 Glutathione remains unapproved by the FDA as a medication.1
