U.S. District Court Judge Nusrat Choudhury ruled on Thursday that Michael Jeffries, the former chief executive of Abercrombie & Fitch, "clearly possesses a rational and factual understanding of the proceedings."1 The 82-year-old defendant, who is currently free on bond, was cleared to stand trial following a period of hospitalization for symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer's disease.1 Federal prison officials at Butner had previously deemed Jeffries mentally fit to stand trial in December after he spent approximately four months there.1
Jeffries will face trial in late October alongside two co-defendants: his partner Matthew Smith and company staffer James Jacobson.1 According to prosecutors, the three men allegedly used promises of modeling jobs to lure men to drug-fueled sex parties.1 All three defendants have pleaded not guilty to federal charges including sex trafficking and interstate prostitution.1 Jeffries left Abercrombie & Fitch in 2014 after more than two decades leading the company.1
