The Australian Capital Territory has agreed to participate in a federal firearms buyback program established following last December's mass shooting in Bondi 1. The territory is home to approximately 7,000 licensed firearms holders, with around 14 percent expected to be affected by proposed limits on the number of guns individuals may possess 1. The ACT currently has 23,000 registered firearms in circulation 1. Under the agreement, the federal government will cover 75 percent of compensation costs, administrative expenses, and firearm destruction 1.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that "we are taking action to strengthen Australia's gun laws and protect the safety of our community" 1. The Northern Territory, Tasmania, and Queensland governments have declined to participate in the buyback scheme 1.
