The New South Wales government has announced a $120 million investment over four years to upgrade critical infrastructure at the Sydney Opera House, beginning in 2027.[1] The renovation program will focus on replacing 150 concrete beams, slabs, and piles located in the tidal zone, as well as modernizing mechanical systems from the 1970s that serve the theatre's operations.[1] The work will encompass the western wing venues including the Playhouse, Studio, and Drama Theatre, along with reinforcing concrete wharves and submerged structures supporting the northern boardwalk.[1]
This second major upgrade phase follows the completion of a $150 million concert hall renovation and builds on earlier investments totaling $234 million from the former Coalition administration, supplemented by over $50 million in funding from the Opera House itself.[1] The facility currently attracts 11 million annual visitors and hosts 1,850 performances per year, drawing 1.4 million attendees.[1]
