China and Arab states have unveiled a comprehensive five-year action plan to combat drought, desertification, and land degradation, marking a significant step in their environmental cooperation.1 The initiative was formally released during a collaborative workshop held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on August 22, 2026, co-hosted by China's National Forestry and Grassland Administration and the Arab League Secretariat.1
The action plan concentrates on five key priority areas: desertification and degraded land restoration, dust storm monitoring and early warning systems, grassland protection and utilization, biodiversity conservation, and wetland preservation and restoration.1 To support implementation, Chinese experts have compiled 30 practical desertification prevention technologies specifically adapted for Arab nations.1 The partnership builds upon the foundation of the China-Arab International Research Center on Drought, Desertification and Land Degradation, which was established in August 2023.1
Over the next five years, both sides intend to deepen cooperation through technology sharing, capacity building, and international exchange to advance prevention and management efforts in these critical environmental domains.1
