Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has urged Melbourne to establish a clear identity and unique positioning as the city's population is projected to reach nine million by 2050.[1] De Blasio will participate in discussions at the Melbourne Summit alongside urban planning expert Carlos Moreno, with sessions focusing on innovation, education, urban planning, health, sport, and the arts.[1] The conference will take place from October 19 to 21 at Federation Square's The Edge venue.[1]
De Blasio has identified artificial intelligence as the most challenging and pervasive issue facing cities in the coming years.[1] Moreno, known for developing the "15-minute city" concept, advocates that residents should have access to all necessities within a 15-minute walk or public transport journey from their homes.[1] Victoria State has already adopted a "20-minute communities" planning strategy aligned with similar principles.[1]
