Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly rejected holding elections during the full-scale war with Russia, arguing that voting would pose an enormous risk to the nation and cause internal division.1 According to Zelenskyy, "in such a war, elections themselves are a huge risk. Elections now would be a tsunami that would split Ukraine."1 His statement comes in direct response to former Defense Minister Rustem Fedorov's proposal made a month ago to conduct a vote, which preceded Fedorov's removal from his position.1

Ukraine currently maintains a suspension of elections under martial law, a measure that enjoys broad public support.1 Zelenskyy additionally warned that Russia plans to mobilize an additional 300,000 troops following parliamentary elections scheduled for September.1 On the international support front, Ukraine secured a significant agreement with Germany to supply 600 Patriot PAC-2 air defense missile interceptors for delivery in 2027-28.1 Norway has also pledged 85 billion Norwegian kroner—equivalent to approximately 9.2 billion U.S. dollars or 7.8 billion euros—in financial support to Kyiv for the 2027 fiscal year.1
