A mass shooting at an In-N-Out Burger restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho on Saturday afternoon left three people dead and seven wounded, but the casualty toll could have been significantly higher had it not been for two armed civilians who engaged the gunman.[1][2] The 24-year-old shooter, Chad Williams, opened fire with an AR-style rifle at approximately 2:30 p.m. before taking his own life.[1][2] Among those who returned fire were Jordan Salinas, a 35-year-old healthcare worker, and an off-duty state police officer who disrupted the attacker's ability to continue shooting inside the restaurant.[1][2]
Law enforcement officials credited the intervention of these two individuals with preventing further loss of life. Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks stated: "We believe their actions helped drive the suspect out of the location and prevented further casualties."[1] Jack Johnson, the Twin Falls County Sheriff, added: "These people are true heroes of our community. They diverted the shooter's attention and without question saved many lives."[1] Of the seven injured victims, two have since been released from the hospital, three are in stable condition, and two remain in critical condition.[1]
