The prosecution contends that Jones used financial inducements to facilitate his conduct, offering money, mobile phones, and vehicles to victims who feared losing both economic support and his friendship if they disclosed the abuse.[1] The defence team, led by lawyer Gabrielle Bashir SC, has signaled plans to challenge the credibility and reliability of prosecution witnesses.[1]
The first witness, identified as J, testified that he was inappropriately touched by Jones more than 20 years ago but remained silent at the time due to fear of losing the financial assistance and companionship Jones provided.[1] J described his relationship with Jones as "tainted by these things" and characterized it as "a relationship filled with fear".[1]
