Opposition politician Boris Nadezhdin has departed Russia for France after being prohibited from competing in September parliamentary elections, according to a video he released Monday from Paris.[1] Nadezhdin, who had criticized Russia's war in Ukraine and attempted to run in the 2024 presidential race, announced his exit while standing before the Eiffel Tower.[1]
The Russian government designated Nadezhdin as a "foreign agent" in July and imposed a fine of approximately 13 U.S. dollars against him for displaying what authorities characterized as extremist symbols.[1] His bid to participate in the presidential election had already faced obstacles when Russia's Supreme Court invalidated more than 9,000 of his campaign signatures, effectively removing him from the race after he had gathered thousands of supporters in January 2024.[1]
Nadezhdin's political career spans decades, having served as a government adviser during the 1990s before later holding positions as a legislator and municipal council member.[1]
