A Swiss geologist and a local miner were kidnapped and killed by unidentified armed individuals near Bangu-Carrière village in the Central African Republic, located approximately 55 kilometers north of Bangui.[1] The incident occurred on Thursday, with details disclosed by the prosecutor's office on Monday.[1] Luca Magini, who worked as a geologist for UAE-based company ADMOG Gold, was among those murdered in the attack.[1] A Central African Army non-commissioned officer was also kidnapped in connection with the incident.[1]
According to witness testimony from geologist Frédéric Ponu, Magini "fell into the hands of the attackers as he was leaving."[1] The kidnapping and killing underscore the security challenges facing the Central African Republic, which has experienced prolonged instability since 2013.[1] The country previously saw activity from Russian private military contractor Wagner, and while the government reached a peace agreement with fourteen armed groups in 2019, six of those organizations subsequently withdrew from the accord.[1]
