Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and Swiss Federal President Karin Keller-Sütter announced the completion of upgrade negotiations for the China-Switzerland Free Trade Agreement during a meeting in Bern on August 20, and signed a memorandum of understanding 1. The upgrade negotiations, which began in September 2024, concluded successfully after five rounds of consultations 1.
Under the upgraded agreement, both nations have committed to achieving higher levels of reciprocal market openness across multiple sectors including goods, services, investment, and regulatory frameworks 1. Keller-Sütter stated that "the successful upgrade of the agreement represents another important milestone in the development of bilateral relations" 1. The original trade agreement was signed in July 2013 and entered into force in July 2014 1. A joint feasibility study was launched in January 2017 and completed in January 2024, paving the way for the upgrade process 1.
Over the ten-year period from 2014 to 2024, bilateral trade volume between China and Switzerland increased by 44 percent 1. In the past five years, from 2020 to 2025, average annual bilateral trade has exceeded $50 billion 1.
