Spanish authorities have arrested five suspects accused of human trafficking in the Ceuta and Andalusia regions, targeting migrants seeking passage to mainland Spain. 1 The suspects charged migrants fees reaching up to €9,000 ($10,500) and used small boats to smuggle undocumented migrants across the Strait of Gibraltar from Ceuta to Spanish territory. 1

The operation comes less than a month after a deadly border chaos incident at Ceuta's southern frontier in late July, during which over 70,000 migrants illegally entered the Spanish enclave, resulting in deaths estimated between 100 and 141 people. 1 In one smuggling operation, seven individuals were crammed into an inflatable boat measuring only five meters long and two meters wide without life jackets and drifted for five hours in the strait. 1

Of the approximately 72,000 migrants who entered Ceuta during the July crisis, most have since returned to Morocco, though several thousand remain in the enclave. 1
