The Trump administration's Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency obtained court orders to conduct involuntary medical procedures on at least ten immigration detainees who were on hunger strike, according to an investigation by the Guardian.[1] At least three individuals were confirmed to have undergone force-feeding, forced intravenous injections, and involuntary blood draws, while two others may have been subjected to forced medical treatment.[1] An additional five detainees ended their hunger strikes before the procedures could commence.[1]
The forced feeding operations began three days before Trump took office in January 2025 and occurred across multiple ICE detention facilities.[1] A Kurdish asylum seeker held at the Port Isabel facility in Texas was force-fed for nearly eight months beginning in May 2025 until his deportation, while another hunger striker at the same facility underwent force-feeding for approximately six months between September 2025 and March 2026.[1] A third detainee at the Krome facility in Miami experienced forced medical treatment lasting nearly three months.[1] In at least six cases, detained immigrants lacked legal representation during court proceedings related to these interventions.[1]
The use of court-ordered force-feeding is not unique to the Trump administration; the Biden government had similarly subjected at least ten hunger strikers to comparable procedures during 2024.[1]
