A drone strike by Sudan's military hit a court facility in northern Darfur on Sunday afternoon, resulting in at least 35 deaths and dozens of injuries.[1][2] The attack targeted a gathering at a court in the village of Gala Zawiya in North Darfur State, an area controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).[2] The strike involved the firing of more than four missiles.[2] Among the casualties were four tribal leaders and two RSF commanders.[2]
The rights organization Emergency Lawyers issued a statement condemning the strike as a severe violation of international humanitarian law, pointing out that the facility served both judicial and social functions for civilians.[1] The group called for an investigation into the incident and highlighted the escalating use of drones to target civilian areas and populated gatherings in Sudan.[2] Drone warfare has become a defining characteristic of Sudan's conflict, accounting for 80 percent of civilian deaths in the first four months of 2026, according to the organization.[1]
This strike is the latest in a conflict that erupted in full-scale war in April 2023, which has claimed at least 59,000 lives according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project.[1] The broader humanitarian crisis has displaced millions of people across the country.[2]
