The convictions of construction boss George Alex and five co-defendants have been overturned after an appellate court found extraordinary instances of jury impropriety during their trial.1 Alex and his associates were originally convicted in June 2024 of money laundering and tax fraud, with Alex receiving a sentence of nine years and three months and the other defendants receiving sentences of eight or eight and a half years.1
The Court of Criminal Appeal determined that juror misconduct was unprecedented in scope.1 One juror, who had been selected as jury foreman on May 9, conducted illegal online searches to obtain information damaging to Alex.1 Additionally, the juror reported to federal investigators that "six members of the jury were offered money," suggesting an alleged attempt to influence the verdict.1 These discoveries emerged when Australian Federal Police, conducting an unrelated drug investigation, executed a search warrant at the juror's residence.1 The fraud allegations at the center of the case involved sums exceeding ten million dollars.1
The appellate court has ordered a new trial for all defendants.1 Alex and his co-defendants are currently on bail pending their appearance in court next month.1
