Former military officer and New South Wales Liberal MP David Elliott testified before the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) that property developer Jean Nassif attempted to remove him from power through bribery directed at political figures.1 Elliott alleged that Nassif provided funding to Liberal Party right-wing operatives including Christian Ellis, Jeremy Greenwood, and Charles Perrottet in an effort to arrange the removal of public officials unfavorable to the developer.1
At the hearing, Elliott also revealed that Nassif had orchestrated a surveillance campaign against him, carried out by private investigator Shane De Kauwe, who monitored a property where Elliott no longer resided.2 Elliott addressed the media outside the ICAC to declare he would pursue legal action against those who had defamed him.2 The case centers on Nassif, who fled to Lebanon in December 2022 facing serious fraud allegations, and whose company Toplace collapsed under approximately 1.6 billion Australian dollars in debt.1
The ICAC inquiry has uncovered additional misconduct during its proceedings. Dallas McInerney, former CEO of Catholic Schools NSW, admitted to performing a factory reset on his work iPhone and iPad at Hunters Hill Hotel, actions ICAC investigator Peggy Dwyer characterized as "an apparent attempt to destroy evidence."12 McInerney was dismissed by the Catholic Schools NSW board on Friday morning following the revelation.2 In separate testimony, former Fair Trading Minister Eleni Petinos expressed her revulsion at being manipulated into involvement in a conspiracy to remove building commissioner David Chandler.2
