Pop rock legend Phil Collins has opened up about a severe alcoholism crisis that nearly cost him his life.[1] The 75-year-old was hospitalized for seven months beginning in November 2023 after alcohol-related damage to his pancreas and kidneys.[1] During his hospitalization, his condition became so critical that physicians considered whether to continue life-sustaining treatment.[1] "My kidneys were packing up, my organs were just seizing up. People were coming to say goodbye," Collins disclosed.[1]
Since his discharge, Collins has remained sober.[1] "I haven't had a drink since," he stated.[1] Collins experienced a previous battle with alcohol in the years following his 2006 divorce from his third wife, Orianne Cevey, during which he had claimed to achieve three years of sobriety by 2015.[1] He has also contended with other serious health challenges, including a diabetes diagnosis in 2016 and spinal and cervical issues that prevented him from playing drums, limiting his role in Genesis's 2021 tour to vocals only.[1]
