Austrian conductor Manfred Honeck and his brother Rainer Honeck, concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic, are collaborating on a production of Richard Strauss's opera "Ariadne auf Naxos" at the Salzburg Festival 1. Directed by Ersan Mondtag, the production relocates the opera's setting from Vienna to Mars and will run through August 28 1.
Manfred has served as music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since the 2008-09 season and recently agreed in June to extend his contract through 2032-33 1. Rainer joined the Vienna State Opera Orchestra in 1981 and was accepted into the Vienna Philharmonic in 1984, where he has held the position of concertmaster since 1992 1. He performs on a 1725 Stradivarius violin known as the "Chaconne" 1.
The brothers come from a musical family. Their father Otto encouraged all nine of his children to learn instruments, later moving the family to Vienna to provide better musical education for them 1. Their mother Frieda passed away in 1965 1.
